職歴
I have a diverse background in biology, business, and English language education. Because of this experience, I started my English teaching career focused on English for Specific Purposes by developing an English for Business course for students at the University of Illinois. After receiving my Master’s Degree in Teaching English as an International Language and returning to Japan, I conducted research in the areas of pragmatic competence and English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) while teaching English at a variety of higher education institutions from the junior college to graduate levels. I taught at Tohoku University for twelve years prior to joining HBU in April 2022. As EMI expanded at Tohoku University and in Japan, I designed and conducted workshops to help non-native English speaking faculty to incorporate best practice of teaching into their classrooms.

Message

I have been in Japan for over 25 years and enjoy interacting with students most of all. I look forward to getting to know students both inside and outside the classroom and giving students many opportunities to speak with me in English. To be able to use a language, students must put what they have learned into practice. This means that you need to use English as much as possible through speaking and listening to others. Thus, my classes focus on having students communicate with one another. Students will often work in groups sharing their ideas. My role as your teacher is to help facilitate these discussions. I hope students will take their English learning outside of the classroom too by participating in club activities like English Speaking Society and visiting me during my office hours.
